Charlotte Public School Families,
We wanted to update you on our ongoing roof maintenance and assessment efforts across the district, specifically at the CUE/Middle School, which was a discussion item on the 3/10 Board of Education meeting. Our main priority is providing a safe learning space for all staff and students. We are pleased to report that independent testing for mold and air quality this week turned up no signs of mold and no impacts to air quality. This testing report was shared with all staff and families, to support the communication transparency in our community.
Roof leaks are incredibly frustrating, and leads to many questions regarding response and future steps. Below is a FAQ that we hope will help.
Why hasn’t this been fixed already?
This is a top priority, and no one wants leaky areas in our buildings. As a parent and a staff member, this is my concern as well. We contacted the manufacturer as soon leaks occurred, but frozen conditions on the roof made inspections and fixes impossible until the weather warmed recently.
Why are we fixing the leaks, instead of replacing the roof?
The roof is under warranty, and we have exercised that warranty work as a responsible use of taxpayer dollars. We want to ensure that the manufacturer is held responsible for their product as contracted.
What about the bond that was just finished?
Bond funding can only be used for projects listed in the approved bond proposal. Those projects were prioritized and created according to feedback from our community, and we cannot add more projects during that construction.
What is the long-term solution?
A new roof on a school building is a major expense. The board has been exploring a potential sinking fund to this aim. As that conversation develops, we hope the many parents who have shared an interest in this issue will bring their energy and support to that campaign to benefit the students and staff at Charlotte Public Schools!
